Understanding common loss types helps operators prioritize safety measures and training:

• Passenger Ejection — Unbelted passengers can be thrown from their seats during sudden stops or collisions, leading to severe injuries.
• Impact Injuries — Without proper restraints, passengers can strike interior surfaces, equipment, or other passengers during maneuvers.
• Wheelchair Movement — Unsecured wheelchairs can slide or tip during transit, causing passenger injuries even if the chair is secured.
• Liability Claims — Failure to properly secure passengers can result in significant liability claims and regulatory penalties.

Different vehicle classes have different seatbelt and restraint requirements:

• Sedans and SUVs — All passengers must wear lap/shoulder belts. Drivers are responsible for verifying passenger compliance before departure.
• Wheelchair Vans — Passengers must be secured with vehicle-installed lap belts in addition to wheelchair tie-downs. Never rely on wheelchair-integrated belts alone.
• Stretcher Vehicles — Patients must be secured with at least two straps across the torso and one across the legs. Side rails must be raised.
• Motorcoaches — FMCSA requires all passengers to wear seatbelts when the vehicle is equipped with them. Operators must post visible signage.

Consistent training and documentation reduce liability exposure:

• Require annual seatbelt and restraint training for all drivers with passenger contact.
• Document each passenger’s seatbelt status at pickup and drop-off in the trip log.
• Maintain records of training completion, vehicle inspection results, and any passenger refusals.
• Review incident data quarterly to identify patterns and adjust training focus.
